Lesson 1 – What is Sports Trading?

Sports trading is a daily occurrence in sports betting market. The differences between people opinions lead to different prices or odds which in turn create profitable trading opportunities. Since odds function like prices, the traditional buy low and sell high concept can be applied.
Sports trading can take two forms. In the static situation, a sports trader will identify differing prices across bookmakers and simultaneously place bets among the bookmakers to secure a profitable trade. This is known as sports arbitrage trading. The other form of trading which is the focus of this course would be trading across time. In this situation, the sports trader will first place a bet with the intention of closing the trade in the opposite direction after the odds had moved in the intended direction predicted. The sports trader would then have executed a profitable trade when that happens.
Since the exact price can never be placed on any outcome of a sporting event, prices fluctuate widely across time as a result of differing human opinions. As such, sports trading opportunities are endless and present themselves all the time across almost all sports events.
Sports trading almost exclusively take place on betting exchanges. This is due to the fact that ONLY betting exchanges allow anyone to set their own odds or prices. A betting exchange functions like a marketplace where people can buy or sell odds to each other with a low commission granted to the betting exchange for the service. In essence, you can be a sports better or even your own bookmaker! As long as you are able to predict the direction of the prices, countless profitable trading opportunities exist. Betfair is currently the largest and most well establsihed betting exchange.
Sports trading also has several notable advantages over conventional sports betting and other gambling:
Far less risk
Can profit from any sports event outcome
Not competing solely against bookmakers but also the general public
Low capital requirement
Greater chances of successs
In sports trading, you always have the option to trade for a small loss or end your trade with a small profit, thus minimizing risks. In the event you finished the trade before the event had even begun, you have secured yourself a locked profit since the event outcome has no bearing on your profitability. When this situation occurs, you have essentially created a riskless profit for yourself.
In sports trading, you are competing against other traders and gamblers as you trade. Compare this to the traditional sports betting approach where you decide or not to take a bet with a bookmaker odds. All in all, this means that the chances of succeeding in sports trading is much higher than in conventional forms of sports betting.
The author started out exploring sports trading as a home project as it is easy to set up. With limited capital, the author was pleased to know that Betfair allows people to place bets in cents. Starting as a small trader, he was able to generate a few hundred a month to eventually becoming a full time sports trader.
In order to succeed in trading, one must use a basic mathematical principle and model to create profitable trades for himeself. This model of backing and laying will be discussed in the next lesson.

Extreme Sports: How Much is Too Much?

For the 30 million student athletes in America, sports can be an excellent way for high school students to build relationships, stay in shape and learn valuable skills about teamwork. But high school sports aren’t always fun and games. With scholarship hopes, parental pressures and an ultra-competitive atmosphere, some student athletes may begin to crumble under the pressure.
Pressure
How much should ride on throwing a ball in a basket, hitting a home run or running fast?
In many ways, high school sports have evolved into a high stakes game that puts student athletes under a tremendous amount of pressure. It may start in little league with over-eager dads and coaches lightheartedly inspiring kids’ major league dreams, but it doesn’t always end there. Student athletes don’t want to let down their parents, their teammates, their school, or with high profile sports, their town.
These pressures are coming at a time when most high schoolers’ confidence and self-image are in question. Children and teens want to live up to the potential that their parents see in them. They also want to ease the burden of college tuition. Earning an athletic scholarship would fulfill both of those goals.
According to The Sports Scholarship Handbook, only 1 in 50 high school athletes receive athletic scholarships. Consider the pressure to be that one along with those from school work, other activities and social lives; that is a lot for a teenager to handle.
The drive to win, to be the very best, can inspire greatness in children and adults alike, but that winner-take-all mentality can also set unrealistic expectations. It is this kind of mindset that can sap the fun out of sports.
Rather than create these pressure-filled pastimes, shouldn’t we use high school sports to foster well-rounded young adults?
Physical Dangers
In order to be successful in high school sports these days, students are required to commit to one sport and play on club teams all year.
When athletes play one sport day-in, day-out all year round, they put themselves in danger of damaging joints, tearing muscles, or causing stress fractures due to the constant repetitive movements. Despite these dangers, coaches continue to warn students that they risk their roster spot and any college hopes by playing multiple sports.
A recent study demonstrates the alarming increase in these repetitive stress injuries. The study tracked the number of “Tommy John” surgeries, procedures done on pitchers to repair damaged elbow ligaments, and was completed by the American Sports Medicine Institute, Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center, in Birmingham, Alabama.
“Before 1997, Tommy John surgery was performed on only 12 of 97 patients (12%) who were 18 years or younger,” coauthor and research director E. Lyle Cain, MD said.
“In 2005 alone, 62 of the 188 operations performed were on high-school athletes, a third of the surgical group,’’ Cain said. “The reality is that this surgery is successful and that’s good. But a disturbing trend of younger kids needing the surgery is troubling.”
Ironically, playing multiple sports can help athletes to be in better physical shape, develop multiple muscle groups, and keep them from burning out on their chosen sport.
Detavius Mason agrees in his article for The Guilford Orthopedic and Sports Medical Center titled “Age of Specialization: One Sport Vs. Multiple Sports.”
“Kobe Bryant, Roger Federer, Tom Brady, Lebron James, Alex Rodriguez,” Mason wrote. “When these names are brought up, a few things come to mind: excellence, transcendent talent, winning, but the thought of them specializing in one sport should not. Kobe & Federer were soccer players, Brady played baseball, Lebron played football and A-Rod played basketball, football and soccer.”
He ends with advice to parents and coaches: “So allow your child to participate in multiple sports … Participating in multiple sports also allows them to see if they are talented in another sport, less stress on the body, overall athleticism increases, gain more friends & social interaction, and there is less pressure to be perfect.”
In extreme examples, some sports can endanger an athlete’s general health. Whether students are trying make weight for wrestling, stay slim for dance or bulk up for football, sports can trigger some dangerous eating and exercise habits.
The Out-Crowd
High school sports can also create an “in crowd” mentality that excludes those who don’t make the cut.
Let’s face it, not all kids are athletic superstars. Does that mean they don’t love the game and want to be a part of the team? Does that mean they should miss out on the social and physical benefits of organized sports? Though some kids stay involved as managers or fans, well-organized recreational options are few and far between.
These exclusions also extend beyond general skill level. With club sports being an unofficial requirement to make many high school teams, underprivileged students are put at a distinct disadvantage because they cannot afford membership fees and travel expenses that club teams require. When try-outs come around, coaches are more likely to favor club players that they’ve seen play for years over unknowns who have only practiced on the playground.
John Cochran, a parent from Newton, Mass., argues that all students should have the chance to play high school sports regardless of skill level.
“Studies have shown that students who participate in high school athletics have higher grade point averages, fewer discipline problems and greater self-esteem,” Cochran wrote in his editorial for Newton’s Wicked Local newspaper.
“By cutting everyone except the very best players, only a small fraction of students will ever benefit from those [government allocated] resources.” he wrote. “If the prevailing philosophy is taken to its logical conclusion, public high schools should provide inferior educational opportunities to students who are not at the very top of their class.”
The Solution
My goal is not to ban high school sports, but to return sports to their original purpose: fun. If we can change the general outlook on these sports – letting kids play multiple sports, refocusing on recreation instead of cutthroat competition, and creating a fair playing field for all would-be athletes – then high schoolers can really go out and play.

Do you need to be wearing a sports bra?

Not normally one to have a pet hates ,but working in the lingerie industry their are two things that always cause me to bite my tongue and resist making comment, the first is a woman who on first look is obviously wearing the wrong size bra (more than you could imagine) and the second is ladies exercising without the support offered by an appropriate sports bra.
Now as a hot blooded male, you might think that the site of bouncing breasts is not something to be discouraged, but I know for women not wearing a sports bra whilst exercising it can lead to breast pain, tension in the upper back and neck and breaking down of the ligaments that support the breasts. There are no muscles in the breast and therefore breast bounce is inevitable when exercising leading to a situation where it is estimated that around 60% of women experience breast pain while exercising, which puts many women off exercise and sports. If you are exercising you wear the appropriate footwear and clothes, surely this has to include an appropriate bra.
Some smaller breasted women may feel that they do not need to wear a sports bra but research has shown that it is just as important for smaller breasted women to support their breasts as those with larger boobs.
Sports bras work by compressing the bust close to the rib cage providing maximum support and a minimum of movement. They should also ideally provide complete coverage, especially important for those with larger boobs so forget the idea of trying to find one that looks glamorous. If you want it to do the job it needs to be high cut and full in the cup, it won’t do the job unless it’s very high cut and full in the cup.
Sports bras come in a variety of designs and although normally soft cup (i.e. Non wired) there are now some underwired sports bras on the market including an underwired sports bra from Freya Active.
It is worth bearing in mind that if you do opt for an underwired sports bra it is not recommended for prolonged or repetitive forms of exercise as occasionally they can rub and cause severe discomfort. It is also important that to be properly fitted with an underwired sport bra to reduce the likelihood of rubbing and discomfort. in the first instance.
Sports bras are designed to offer differing degrees of support depending on the level of activity you are going to engage in. These are generally low impact (level 1), medium impact (level 2), high impact (level 3) and extreme (Level 4). Manufacturers may categorise their bras differently so it always important to check what the types of activity a particular bra may be suitable for. Examples of this are the Royce High Impact Sports Bra which is a level 4 bra or the Naturana Medium Impact Sports Bra which would be classed a level 3 bra.
So having said that manufacturers vary in how they describe their bras as a general rule of thumb the four categories can be broken down as follows; Low impact sport bras are suitable for activities such as yoga and general gym wear. Medium impact sports bras are suitable for fast walking and cycling, high impact bras would be needed for sports such as tennis, step aerobics and ball games, with the extreme or level 4 bras used for running, horse riding and other high impact sports.
One of the properites that is important in a sports bra is it’s ability to wick, that is to absorb moisture and draw it away from the skin, leaving you comfortable and dry. That is one reason why a sports bra is preferable to a normal bra even for low impact activity. There are a number of high tech fibres that are used in sport bras because of their ability to draw moisture away from the skin, including Tactel and Coolmax, so it is worth checking any sports bra out to see if it has similar properties.
So if you are involved in any sport or exercise make sure you get yourself the right sports bra for your level of activity. Make sure it fits and is comfortable and finally have fun in the knowledge that everything will stay exactly where it should.
