What can I do with this qualification?
Graduates of the National Qualification in Exercise, Health Studies and Personal Training are fully qualified fitness instructors and personal trainers and can work in the health fitness industry at home and abroad or in a self employed capacity as a personal trainer.
Successful completion allows graduates to obtain professional indemnity insurance cover to faciliate exercise prescription to members of the public.
Programme Overview
The National Qualification in Exercise, Health Studies and Personal Training will offer successful graduates the opportunity to prescribe safe and effective exercise to the general public in either group fitness situations or on an individual one-to-one personal training basis.
This qualification, which is delivered by the National College of Exercise and Health Studies (NCEHS), offers individuals the opportunity to learn the skills required to teach safe and effective exercise to the general public. Exercise prescription offered by NCEHS Health Fitness Instructors includes resistance training classes using the wide variety of weight training machines available in health clubs and fitness centres. Graduates also deliver group exercise to music classes, either in health clubs and fitness centres in an employed capacity, or in community centres, parish halls etc. as self employed individuals. They also have the opportunity to deliver one-to-one personal training as this excellent programme also includes the National Qualification in Personal Training.
As a result of the superb quality of instructional skills and internationally accepted qualifications, NCEHS Health Fitness Instructors can obtain a highly specified Professional Indemnity Insurance policy which is available exclusively to our graduates.
NCEHS graduates will find themselves immediately employable and in strong demand within the health fitness profession. Opportunities also exist for NCEHS qualified Health Fitness Instructors to work on board luxury cruise liners through our professional relationship with Steiner, the company responsible for staff placement in this area.
Entry Requirements
The National Qualification in Exercise, Health Studies and Personal Training is open to anybody with a strong interest in exercise and health fitness and the desire to pass their enthusiasm on to the general public as part of their day-to-day working routine as either a full time or part time health fitness instructor.
The course content includes anatomy and physiology, exercise to music, resistance training, diet and sports nutrition, first aid, injury prevention and other areas of interest. The content is delivered to facilitate adult learners of mixed ability.

Tutors
All National College of Exercise and Health Studies tutors are expert in their chosen field with some having represented Ireland at international level in health fitness competition.
All senior tutors have many years of experience working in the health fitness profession and, having obtained a H. Dip. in Education have learned the skills required to deliver complex information to learners of mixed ability.
All tutors have dedicated areas of speciality to enhance the learning experience for NCEHS students.
CPD
NCEHS graduates have a responsibility to ensure that the exercise prescription which they offer the public is current, safe and effective. In order to achieve this goal graduates must participate in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) which ensures that they are always operating within ‘best practice’ standards.
CPD can be achieved through attendance at health fitness conventions and conferences or through the participation in advanced educational programmes which bring graduates up to date with changes.

If you are trying to lose weight and have been doing so repeatedly for years and years, just yo-yoing from losing to gaining again just as fast, I have the answer!!
The problem is probably due to the fact that your goal of losing weight, living a healthier life style ,doing more exercise was not specific enough or powerful enough to make your brain wake up and stop those old patterns of behaviour and replace them with something that is going to give you what you want.
If we specifically know that we want to be a size 12, weigh 10 stone and be able to fit into that black dress, and also envisage the benefits of being all that. i.e. looking great, feeling full of energy, feeling proud that we are in charge and not the biscuit tin!! – this becomes incredibly powerful and attractive for our brains to want and to move towards.
We have to know what we want very specifically.” I want to be thinner, fitter, etc” does not work.
If you said “I want to be richer! And I gave you £1, technically you would be, but it would not make any long lasting changes in your life and I doubt that you would see any benefits of that money!
However, if you said “I want to earn £30,000/year, you have something very specific to aim at. To look for, to work towards. From that amount you will also see the need for a rigid plan that will help you on the road to earning your £30,000.
Can you see the difference?
Let’s try it with eating healthily and exercising………
If we think of this in terms of a “what?” and “why?” thing, the “what” is what do we want, vividly, in detail…
Try closing your eyes and seeing your desired “what” happening in front of you, as if you are a film star. What is going on?
Have a look around and see what you look like, what are the sounds around you? Can you hear laughter and all the admiring comments from everyone as they see how good you look?
What can you feel in your body, the pleasing fit of your clothes, rather than bursting out of them as usual! The joy of pleasurably exercising and the fun you have. Imagine the delicious food which nurtures and feeds your precious body, and how you enjoy the benefits of this food as you eat in a controlled and responsible way.
You are solely thinking of the great benefits of changing your life style, the “what” and how I will like it!
Next we need to really examine “Why?” must we change, maybe our eating habits mean that we are totally out of control and that our health is at risk in a big way ie.diabetes and a host of other problems due to over eating and under exercising.
We need to look in to the future, 5years, 10 years and vividly look for the consequences of the behaviour we imagine we are continuing to have. We really, really need to feel the pain now of behaving in this way!!!!
So many people go back to old habits after good intentions for this very reason-they have not looked down the road of gloom …….
If we own up to what we are leading to we get massive motivation to replace this old behaviour which leads to a very different place.
The old habits must be shoved out of the way with compelling new habits that lead us to happiness and where we wish to be.
For example, over eating and inactivity can be replaced with a passion for healthy and fantastic food and having exercise as part of your daily life.
This is a choice, which once you are aware that you have a choice becomes so attractive and desirable.
So, what is the happier route?
To stay stuck in a situation which makes you unhappy? Or to do something about it, with someone to support you and keep you on the path that you have now chosen?

How would you rate your own overall health on a scale of 1-10 right now (10 being top marks, 1 being lowest)?
I can tell you personally after coaching with more than a thousand people the average is between 4-6. The lower of those scores being the folks with aches, pains, weight or other issues, running through to the higher grades that gave answers such as; ‘I used to be really fit, but then I just got a bit lazy’, or ‘I know I should do something about this (pain/flab/headache, etc) but I never get around to it.
The big ‘W’ weight.
Above all, being overweight and unfit are the two biggest culprits that can then open the door to so many other conditions and illnesses. According to a report by the Royal College of Physicians, the Faculty of Public Health, and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health over half the UK population are either overweight or obese (with a body mass index of more than 30), which breaks down to 70% of men and 63% of women.
Currently, one in 5 adults and one in 20 children under the age of 16 are obese, and if current trends continue it is estimated that at least one third of adults & children will be obese by 2020 – and these figures are more or less similar in other developed or developing countries around the world. I’m not writing this simply to shock you, but to impress upon you the absolute importance of maintaining your body in as good a shape as possible.
People come to me in coaching to help them create a great business plan, to move forward in some area of their life, to stoke up their motivation in a project. Yet, the one most solid basis for any of that is to be as healthy as possible. In creating a healthy life plan, to be in optimum health, is the one sure-fire way of achieving that success. Most experts believe there are 4 basic areas to achieving a better quality of health.
* Belief systems.
* Food & eating habits.
* Exercise.
* Support.
Belief Systems.
Simply, what goes on in your head creates who you are and what you do with your life. That’s wonderful if all is well. If however, something is not as you want, whether it is health, career, finance, etc, one of the first areas to look at should be belief, because what you believe you generally create.
Food & eating habits.
You already know this! There has now been so much information on nutrition, diets, slimming, weight loss, optimum health and the like published that unless you’ve been living on Pluto the last few decades you must have been aware of at least some of it. What those articles don’t tackle however, is what might be right for you. We are all different; we all enjoy, and dislike different things. Therefore, taking an individual approach, one that works for you, is key to achieving success.
Exercise.
Exercise should be tailored to your own body, age and lifestyle. It’s like saying ‘everyone likes ice cream’ sure, some people do, though even with those, some would prefer chocolate, vanilla or strawberry.
Exercise can be so much more than going to the gym. If you have a fabulous gym near you that fires your imagination, then that’s great. However, if not, then ask yourself ‘what would be a fun way for me to raise my energy with?’ A couple of my friends bought inline roller skates and spend Sunday’s rolling around the park. Another rents a bike and takes a day trip to the country.
What would it be for you, because if you do find the fun in exercise it’s the one area that’ll affect all others?
Support.
This doesn’t mean someone doing all the work for you. It doesn’t mean that if you don’t have the support of your partner or best friend it can’t be done, and it certainly doesn’t mean that if you can’t afford a personal trainer or nutritionist, better health & fitness are impossible.
What it DOES mean is that you can begin today to support yourself better and more systematically. Do whatever you need to do to take ownership of your own well-being and begin the journey to achieving better, more vibrant health for you.

We all know that New Year’s resolutions come and go, and that our best intentions for improving and maintaining our health, fitness, and well-being most often fall by the wayside. After all, we usually have our hands full with the demands of our careers, our obligations to our families, and the requirements of daily life. Nevertheless, there seems to be a growing movement in this country, comprised of people who are putting their proverbial feet down and taking a stand for better health. These aren’t the fitness gurus and diet mavens, but rather ordinary people who recognize that time passes much too quickly, and who know that, ultimately, it is up to each one of us to make positive changes to improve our health and well-being. In the process, we can reclaim our lives.
Whether you’re a fledgling member of this movement or a time-tested veteran, you know that health products can be a boon in helping you to achieve your goals. Here are some categories of health products that people across the nation are using to give them an edge in feeling greater, faster.
Sleep Aids: An unprecedented number of people report having problems getting to sleep, sleeping through the night, or sleeping soundly enough. When we don’t get enough sleep, we don’t perform as well in our daily tasks, we increase our likelihood of getting into accidents, and we lose our motivation to effect positive change in our lives. Walk if you can’t run!
» Myth: You have to spend hours running on a treadmill to really get in shape fast.
» Fact: Walking every day is a smart and easy way to kick off your daily workout routine. Keeping a steady stride will help you burn calories, lose weight and relieve any pre-wedding stress.
» Go!: Try to shoot for at least 30 minutes of walking a day when possible, and do this at least 5 days a week. According to the American Council on Exercise, beginners can tone down the initial pressure by limiting both their pace and the distance they walk. This means you can break up the walking into manageable chunks throughout the day and still reap the benefits. Start off with a 5-minute morning stroll around your neighborhood; then increase your time and distance gradually throughout the day. Take a 10-minute walk during your lunch break and a 15-minute walk in the evening after work. Remember that keeping a steady pace is more important than the speed in which you walk. Your goal is to elevate your heart rate slightly (if you can’t talk while you walk, you’re going too fast).
Don’t skip stretching!

» GO!: Since most types of workouts cause the muscles in your body to flex and contract, you’ll want to stretch before and after each, and at least three times a week, to maintain a balance – especially if you don’t usually exercise. It’s normal to feel a little tension, but you never want to prolong or hold a painful stretch.

» Go!: You’re busy and sometimes need to snack on the go – we get it. But if you must hit the vending machines, start by seeking out snacks that are low in fat, sodium, calories or carbohydrates, and beware of portion sizes. Healthy Living is the number one goal among North Americans. However, 80% of the population do not know that cooking healthy, eating healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables, and making healthy choices can mean the difference between life and death. I have written this health and fitness article so that people can make healthy choices for their own personal health care and well being.
Here are 25 ways to eat and drink healthy:
1. Do not drink iced water, especially not with meals. This interferes with flow of your digestive juices and impairs digestion.
2. Drink a cup of fresh pure water, at room temperature, the first thing in the morning and last thing at night. You should drink it hot only when you are constipated. In that case, a little lime or lemon may be added.
3. Drink six to eight glasses of water every day, approximately one glass for every fourteen pounds of your body weight. Drink mineral water to be on safe side.
4. Do not drink water with your meals, but drink it half hour before or two to three hours after your meals so as not to disturb the process of your digestion by diluting the digestive juices.
5. Sip the water slowly, never swig it down at once.
6. In order to restore life elements of the water lost in boiling or processing, pass it through the air, pouring it from one cup to another. You will soon notice that this gives a slightly invigorating and stimulating effect, which is absent in dead and devitalized water.
7. It is better that you eat fresh fruits and vegetables than to drink fruit or vegetable juices.
8. Do not keep juices standing, as they will lose their precious enzymes. Apple juice for instance loses one third of them after 30 minutes and all of them after two hours.
9. Coffee, tea, alcohol and chocolate are not recommended because tannic acid, theine, caffeine and theobromine are stimulants.
10. Milk is really a food, not a drink. You should have it in small sips. Otherwise, it will likely produce indigestion.
11. It is not the amount of food you consume that nourishes your body, but only the amount the body itself can assimilate.
12. Choose carefully the foods that fit your system, choose them just as carefully as you choose a shirt, a hat or a tie. You have to try different food combinations until you figure out which health food suit you best. Make health choices such as steam fresh vegetables.
13. Avoid all devitalized foods like canned food, polished rice, white flour and white sugar. Use unpolished rice, whole wheat flour and brown sugar or honey.
14. Another healthy choice is to chew your food carefully and slowly, especially if it is the starchy kind, so that it may be properly mixed with saliva, otherwise starch will be waiting for digestion for several hours.
15. Toasted bread is better than fresh. Do not eat it with liquid. Drink before eating the bread, as starch should be converted into glucose by saliva.
16. Eat only one starch to a meal. For instance, if you have rice then omit potatoes, bread, macaroni starchy pudding and so on.
17. If you suffer from gas, it is advisable to plan your meals so that you do not eat protein and starch together; and especially not with cooked sulphur foods like green peas, cabbage, broccoli, eggs, turnips, and so on because gas is produced by sulphur working on the starch.
18. Do not throw away the water in which vegetables have been boiled but use it for gravies, soup or for drinking. Potato water is excellent as it alkalizes the body.
19. Fried greasy foods as well as rich dishes should be avoided altogether, because these digest more slowly than fat itself. Fat is the last to leave your stomach, carbohydrates is first and then proteins.
20. All saturated fats, such as lard, butter, margarine, eggs, and dairy products will increase the blood cholesterol level and can be classified as unessential fats.
21. Any diet which is high in saturated fat is dangerous. So you should eat a balanced meal, a high fat and low protein diet inhibits the function of enzymes.
22. Remember, it is not only the calories and amount of fat that decide the nutrition and health, but the quality of fat. Bacon, for instance has caloric fat value only. It contains nothing else, neither vitamins, nor minerals.
23. Six cups of fresh raw cabbage juice a day keep peptic ulcers away.
24. The richest source of protein is soya bean. Two pounds of soya been flour contain as much protein as five pounds of cheese, five pounds of boneless meat or six dozen eggs or 10 liters of milk. Soya bean is the only non-acid forming protein.
25. The most essential rule about food, however, has nothing to do with quality, quantity or preparation, but with your mental attitude at the time you are eating it.

Predicting Your Future Health – New Ways To Deliver Health-care

Predictive Health-care may not be a household term quite yet, but basically this new, emerging way of delivering health-care in the US focuses on predicting health and its risk factors, as opposed to waiting for disease to begin. Predictive Health-care delivery is by no means a niche market idea in the realm of Alternative Medicine, a feasibility study has been published by a mainstream institution: Emory University Predictive Health Initiative. It alludes to the many advantages including cost savings.
The Change to “Measuring Health” before Discovering Disease
Health is commonly defined as the absence of disease symptoms, and it is disease symptoms that are commercially relevant. In fact, today’s Health-care systems are all set-up to measure disease, we are searching for what’s wrong, not what’s right. However, physical symptoms are evidence of the last stage in the progression of an Illness which originated much earlier. Thus, the purpose of Preventive- or Predictive Health is to identify any sign of degradation in the “whole Health”, usually referred to as Holistic Health and what is perceived as Vitality. Whole Health consists of the 6 interweaving elements: Physical – Mental – Emotional – Spiritual – Social – Intellectual Health. As Physical Illness is usually the final manifestation of an Emotional Trauma, treating the Physical Symptom is only a temporary fix. In the attempt to forestall Physical Illness we need to identify the potential cause for the loss of Vitality – and Lifestyle is the usual culprit. By Lifestyle we mean the person’s intentional choices such as Nutrition and Activities, and circumstantial factors, such as Environmental Exposure, History, Believes, Social Integration, etc.
Conventional Health-care is not concerned with these intertwining Mind-Body issues, because the medical science consensus neither extends to analytical methods nor the interpretation of results. The generally accepted medical standard for diagnosing disease rests on sample collection, which can be reduced to numerical values, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, body fat, bone density and various biomarkers.
In Predictive Health such samples and methods may be used, but in presumed healthy people, these “disease markers” just resemble a snap shot of a condition at the time of sample collection. If all results check out in the “Normal” range, a person is considered physically healthy, even when all 5 non-physical health elements are compromised. In such case, a physical symptom has just not yet established itself measurably.
Holistic Health or Vitality may be defined as the sum of all 6-elements that comprise whole Health. A person, who has been clinically classified as physically healthy, may however completely lack Vitality, if any of the non-physical elements is weakened; while we may perceive a person to have great Vitality, if all health elements are strong and in harmony.
What is needed is a process that measures Vitality as the sum of all Health elements. As Vitality is a highly volatile condition, we cannot solely rely on static samples to predict a person’s susceptibility to contract any disease, nor can we recommend a Nutritional concept or Lifestyle modification based on static numericals, such as cholesterol, blood pressure, glucose and insulin. Instead, we have to dynamically monitor how well a person copes with lifestyle specific conditions that include various degrees of stress and rest, and we have to measure cellular function under changing situations. We want to assess the wear and tear that the body has undergone to date.
These Test results incorruptibly and reproducibly portray a person’s immunity, strengths and vulnerabilities . When correlated with the person’s history, lifestyle and personal objectives, a Lifestyle optimization program (behavior modification) can be generated that does not rely on lifetime prescription drugs.
Predictive Health – a quantum leap in Health-care
The passionate debates on Health-care reform are far from over and will not come to a consensus as long as it is wholly focused on pharmaceuticals based symptoms fixing, all while people get more concerned about their sustained Health.
A Japanese “Attitude Survey on Health and Preparation” (November 1, 2010; Hello-Global.com) states that 69.4% of the respondents “are worried about their future health”. There are more indications of people’s concerns about their future Health: In the US we are seeing sustained increase in growth rates for Organic Foods even in a recession. The statistics furnish the evidence that people are awaking to the fact that protecting health is better than recovering from illness. The leading market research and information analysis company RNCOS Press Release of October 29, 2010 reveals that the US Organic Food Industry will orchestrate 12.2% CAGR during 2010-2014. North American market growth for Organic Personal Care products amounts to 20% annually, according to Organic Monitor.
“Even in the midst of the economic downturn, the Gym, Health & Fitness Clubs industry has maintained steady growth, with membership rates growing consistently and profits remaining solid. Demand for gyms and health and fitness clubs will continue to rise over the next five years, as the general public becomes more health conscious and the aging population places a greater value on staying fit” – According to IBIS World Industry Report of September 17, 2010. Merriman Curhan Ford, Fitness & Wellness Industry Report predicts US sales of Health and Wellness goods to reach $ 170 billion by 2012, a growth of 70% in 5 years. Gym memberships for people over 50 will rise even more dramatic over the next 10 years with a target market potential of 139.2 million people by 2020; according to Capital Connection, March 2010 Newsletter. The Nutritional Supplements market in the US will exceed billion in 2014, yielding a compound annual growth rate of 7%; says Market Resaearch.com, in the September 2, 2010 Press Release.
These trend numbers clearly portray the global shift to Preventive Health, lead by the US which boasts the highest Health-care costs in the world. If we are truly concerned about our future health, evidenced by spending substantial money for healthy food and lifestyle, it should come naturally that we can no longer rely on drug-centric sick-care, but opt for Predictive and Preventive care.
