Health, Fitness and Confidence

If you are trying to lose weight and have been doing so repeatedly for years and years, just yo-yoing from losing to gaining again just as fast, I have the answer!!

The problem is probably due to the fact that your goal  of losing weight, living a healthier life style ,doing more exercise was not specific enough or powerful enough to make your brain wake up and stop those old patterns of behaviour and replace them with something that is going to give you what you want.

If we specifically know that we want to be a size 12, weigh 10 stone and be able to fit into that black dress, and also envisage the benefits of being all that. i.e. looking great, feeling full of energy, feeling proud that we are in charge and not the biscuit tin!! – this becomes incredibly powerful and attractive for our brains to want and to move towards.

We have to know what we want very specifically.” I want to be thinner, fitter, etc” does not work.

If you said “I want to be richer! And I gave you £1, technically you would be, but it would not make any long lasting changes in your life and I doubt that you would see any benefits of that money!

However, if you said “I want to earn £30,000/year, you have something very specific to aim at. To look for, to work towards. From that amount you will also see the need for a rigid plan that will help you on the road to earning your £30,000.

Can you see the difference?

Let’s try it with eating healthily and exercising………

If we think of this in terms of a “what?” and “why?” thing, the “what” is what do we want, vividly, in detail…

Try closing your eyes and seeing your desired “what” happening in front of you, as if you are a film star. What is going on?

Have a look around and see what you look like, what are the sounds around you? Can you hear laughter and all the admiring comments from everyone as they see how good you look?

What can you feel in your body, the pleasing fit of your clothes, rather than bursting out of them as usual! The joy of pleasurably exercising and the fun you have. Imagine the delicious food which nurtures and feeds your precious body, and how you enjoy the benefits of this food as you eat in a controlled and responsible way.

You are solely thinking of the great benefits of changing your life style, the “what” and how I will like it!

Next we need to really examine “Why?” must we change, maybe our eating habits mean that we are totally out of control and that our health is at risk in a big way ie.diabetes and a host of other problems due to over eating and under exercising.

We need to look in to the future, 5years, 10 years and vividly look for the consequences of the behaviour we imagine we are continuing to have. We really, really need to feel the pain now of behaving in this way!!!!

So many people go back to old habits after good intentions for this very reason-they have not looked down the road of gloom …….

If we own up to what we are leading to we get massive motivation to replace this old behaviour which leads to a very different place.

The old habits must be shoved out of the way with compelling new habits that lead us to happiness and where we wish to be.

For example, over eating and inactivity can be replaced with a passion for healthy and fantastic food and having exercise as part of your daily life.

This is a choice, which once you are aware that you have a choice becomes so attractive and desirable.

So, what is the happier route?

To stay stuck in a situation which makes you unhappy? Or to do something about it, with someone to support you and keep you on the path that you have now chosen?

On Sunday, I watched the Flora London Marathon 2008 on DVD. Thirty four thousand people crossed the finish line. Sadly I was not one of them, having failed to secure a place in the race. When I lived in London, I was able to cheer the runners on from my garden, and have dreamed of running the race ever since.

I had a friend who ran a gym and told me of the many people he knew who had permanently injured themselves as a result of running a marathon.

I also know many runners who have run marathons and done so without long term negative health effects.

So, on Sunday, I dusted off my trainers and went for a run, and as I ran, I wondered just how good is running a marathon for you?

Getting out a calculator, a pen, some paper, a sixteen week marathon training plan, and a calorie guide, I worked out the following.

• If you do a 16 week marathon training plan, you can expect to run about 600 miles over those 16 weeks.

• Running 600 miles is the equivalent of doing about 23 marathons.

• If you run at a four hour marathon pace (about 9 minutes a mile), 23 marathons will take you 93 hours

• That is about 5,600 minutes.

• 5,600 minutes of running at 9 minutes a mile will burn about 88,000 calories. • Burning 88,000 calories is the equivalent of losing 25lbs in weight.

• Training and running a marathon will help you lose between 1 ½ to 2 stone in weight!

The benefits to me of losing this sort of weight, is that it would take me down to my ideal weight. How would losing 1 ½ to 2 stone benefit you?

Are there any other benefits to running a marathon?

Yes there are. Here are just a few of them.

• Increased self esteem.

• Increased fitness.

• More social contacts.

• A lasting sense of achievement.

• Running is fun.

I really like the last benefit. I find running great fun, especially as I vary my running routes as much as possible. Varying your routes always gives you something new to see as you run.

What about injury?

I used to let the thought of injury hold me back. I have since learned that providing you are sensible, and don’t overdo it you should avoid injury. Many injuries result from overdoing the training. Another cause of injury is using poor or badly fitting equipment.

If you want to avoid injury, one of the key things to do when running is to listen to your body. Your body will know when it has almost had enough or when things are starting to go wrong, and it’ll warn you. If you feel pain, don’t ignore it – listen to it and figure out why.

Of course before starting any new system of exercise you should always consult your doctor before hand.

Running a marathon is not easy due to the time you need to commit to training. Powerfully Positive People know this, but have strategies to get past all the difficulties.

·         You need to have commitment, and want it badly enough.

·         You need to have a plan, breaking your big goals into smaller ones.

·         You need to have perseverance, pushing on to each successive goal, just like taking each step when your legs are tired and your feet are aching.

·         You need to reward yourself, patting yourself on the back each time you achieve a goal along the way.

I have shown the rewards in terms of your health, fitness, and mental health more than outweigh the effort you will have to put in to train for, and run a marathon.

The Twenty Four Hour fitness center is like your one stop shop to everything about fitness and your well-being.  Imagine it as the Walmart of the fitness industry.    Twenty Four Hour fitness centers are located in a number of  areas in the state.   All of them have equipments which cater to weight training as well as cardio vascular equipments.  A variety of fitness gear is also available.  Twenty Four Hourfitness centers all have locker rooms and – believe it or not – baby sitting accommodations.  Over all, the Twenty Four Hour fitness center is a complete, clean and extremely well maintained facility that especially caters to all your fitness wants, needs and preferences.

It is very easy to get started on your path to fitness.  Twenty Four Hour fitness centers have over three hundred clubs located in the whole nation and is open for twenty four hours. There is no long term contract to sign up in.  You have the option to pay monthly, but you are offered a complete personal training package that suits your body type, body weight and built so you are ensured with a service that is truly personalized.

Which club do you belong in?

Twenty Four Hour fitness center gives you the option to choose the specific type of club that you desire.  The active club involves a group exercise as well as free weights and cardio machines to work off that fat.   The sport club also includes everything in the active club but with additions such as basketball, heated pools and whirlpool.  The super-sport club also includes the amenities found those in the active club and the sport  club but with more additions such as massages, a sauna as well as a steam room.  The ultra sport club is the works.  It includes most of the amenities found in the active, sport and super sport club, plus a day spa, courts for racquetball as well as an executive locker room.

The Path to Performance

It all depends on what you want to achieve.  In Twenty Four Hour fitness centers, a uniquely specialized fitness program is available to anyone who simply wants to improve their performance in a specific sport or is seriously training for competition.  The program is designed by athletes.  

The Performance program includes a menu plan specifically customized for those intense workouts.  A resistance training is also available as well as a full cardio workout.  After your exercise, a metabolic rate test is conducted.  

This program is designed for those who wants to get started as soon as possible but has no clear and specific idea how.  This is clearly the best option for them because all the information on nutrition, resistance training is learned through this program.  This is the foundation one needs in order to have results that would last your body a lifetime.
The Components of  Fitness

A regular exercise, an intense workout is just part and parcel of your path to health, fitness and well-being.  There are other factors that should just as well play a part and which Twenty Four Hour fitness center teaches you.  

Food intake is one of them.  A menu is provided to those who follow the performance path.  This details what you should or should not eat, or at least eat less of, if not completely avoid.  Cardio is also one as this enhances  your endurance to stress and exercise. Vitamins and supplements are a necessity unless you are sure that you are able to receive the proper amounts of iron, calcium, vitamin C or D or E in a day.  If not, it is best to take them in.  Resistance training is a feather in your fitness cap and is a necessary tool for being healthy, wealthy and wise.

Intelligent fitness tips for brides who want to be ready for the biggest day of their life

Your wedding day is fast approaching, and naturally, you want to look your absolute best as you head down the aisle. Before you freak out about what to do with your “trouble areas” and start thinking of all the reasons you hate working out, remember you can do this without a no-nonsense personal trainer or pricey gym membership. It just takes a little discipline, focus and a few smart fitness tricks!

Walk if you can’t run!

» Myth: You have to spend hours running on a treadmill to really get in shape fast.

» Fact: Walking every day is a smart and easy way to kick off your daily workout routine. Keeping a steady stride will help you burn calories, lose weight and relieve any pre-wedding stress.

» Go!: Try to shoot for at least 30 minutes of walking a day when possible, and do this at least 5 days a week. According to the American Council on Exercise, beginners can tone down the initial pressure by limiting both their pace and the distance they walk. This means you can break up the walking into manageable chunks throughout the day and still reap the benefits. Start off with a 5-minute morning stroll around your neighborhood; then increase your time and distance gradually throughout the day. Take a 10-minute walk during your lunch break and a 15-minute walk in the evening after work. Remember that keeping a steady pace is more important than the speed in which you walk. Your goal is to elevate your heart rate slightly (if you can’t talk while you walk, you’re going too fast).
Don’t skip stretching!

» Myth: As long as you break a sweat, you’re getting a full workout.

» Fact: Giving your body a proper warm-up and cool-down isn’t just a necessary part of any workout; it has plenty of additional benefits. Stretching before and after a workout not only increases overall flexibility and boosts circulation, but according to the staff at the Mayo Clinic, it can also improve your posture and relieve stress.

» GO!: Since most types of workouts cause the muscles in your body to flex and contract, you’ll want to stretch before and after each, and at least three times a week, to maintain a balance – especially if you don’t usually exercise. There’s an art to stretching properly. Breathe consistently and deeply, but be careful not to push your limits. It’s normal to feel a little tension, but you never want to prolong or hold a painful stretch.
Snack smart!

» Myth: You must avoid the vending machines at work at all costs.

» Fact: Smart snack choices can be found among the usual junk food offerings. You just have to know what to avoid.

» Go!: You’re busy and sometimes need to snack on the go – we get it. But if you must hit the vending machines, start by seeking out snacks that are low in fat, sodium, calories or carbohydrates, and beware of portion sizes. Live Healthy America ranks classic favorites like Doritos, Skittles and Frosted Strawberry Pop-Tarts among its top five “just don’t do it” vending snacks. Avoid these and grab something from its best-bets list: Baked! Lay’s Original Chips, Planters Sunflower Kernels and Smartfood Reduced Fat Popcorn.
Don’t believe everything you read about water!

» Myth: Drinking bottle after bottle of water will help you lose weight.

» Fact: There is such a thing as drinking “too much” water, and doing so can cause cramping and sodium deficiencies among other complications.

» Go!: People often say that drinking lots of water can help with dieting and intense workout plans. But if you dig a little more, you’ll find that some medical and health care professionals disagree. While keeping hydrated can help cleanse the body, drinking too much water could lead to decreased sodium levels in the blood. Stay hydrated, but be careful not to overdo it.

It has become more evident than ever, that the weekly jet setting business person is more apt to fall off the health and fitness regimen, when compared to non traveling business person. This can be extremely frustrating for them, as in most cases, the intention and desire to keep up with their fitness program is good, but the conscientious desires are often sabotaged by the last minute unexpected business meeting and late evening networking dinner.

My company Somagenesis Health and Fitness has earned the reputation in the San Diego business community as the “business persons” personal training company of choice”. As president of Somagenesis, I personally manage the health and fitness lifestyles of 25 upper echelon businessmen and women. Approximately 50% of them travel weekly, and struggle with eating healthy, and/or getting in a simple maintenance workout. Here are some great and interesting solutions to these common problems.

1. Nutrition: Stocking up of healthy pre-assembled meal entrees is an easy solution. Companies like Susan’s Healthy Gourmet, or Nutra-System can create tasty healthy foods based on your dietary and caloric needs. A small carry on refrigerator lunch box can easily store 3 full meals and several quality protein bars. These food items, can save you time, money and the frustration involved in trying to locate healthy eating establishments. I have personally checked with many of the local commuter airlines, and their are no restrictions to carrying on personal foods or snacks.

2. Eating out: If you are in a situation where you must attend an important business dinner, be smart and make the right choices. Stick to red wines at 70 calories a glass versus the Apple Martini or Dewar’s Scotch on the rocks, which can easily amount to 450 calories. Alcohol carbohydrate calories are always converted to fat calories by the liver. Don’t drink yourself fat with alcohol calories. With meal entree’s always stick to roasted lean meats, fish and poultry entrees. Skinless chicken, roast beef, and halibut are always good low fat, low calorie choices. If in doubt about the healthiness of the food, always ask the waiter how the food is prepared. Don’t be reserved and shy, your associates will be impressed by your healthy mindset.

As a precursor to your main entree’, always indulge in a healthy high fiber garden salad with low caloric, low fat dressing. The fiber will create a gastronomical sense of satiety before you get to your main entree. Always beware of the bread basket that sits before you. A single slice of French, Italian or Sourdough bread can cost you 200 non nutritious calories, and you know, it is impossible to eat just one! Just say no.

3. Eating and drinking during boring conference room meetings: Keep your eyes and hands off the sugar glazed danish with the raspberry jelly in the center, bear claws and coffee cake. On average, eating one of these belly bombers will cost you 500 calories of junk, gut bloating calories. Ask any New York City Cop sitting in his squad car about the ramifications of just sitting and indulging in Dunkin Doughnuts. Just say no!

Instead, bring some of your favorite energy bars, trail mix medley or snack on the fruit that is commonly available at most conferences. Both Medical and business conferences are notorious for monotone speakers and a head bobbing audience, so coffee, tea, orange juice and and water are always in abundance. Coffee, tea and water are always your best choices, especially if staying awake is a problem. These drink items are low in sugar, and caffeine can rev up your adrenal gland and your metabolism. Conversely, orange juice and other fruit juices only jack up your blood sugars, which result in a post hypoglycemic reaction and secondary drop in insulin level. The end result sleepiness and hunger pangs. Remember, the secondary function of insulin is abdominal fat storage.

4. Getting in that workout: Be sure not to forget to pack your workout cloths and shoes. The good news is many hotels have a small workout center and/or a swimming pool. Hotels like Marriott and Double Tree now have a treadmill, Swiss ball and dumb bells in your personal hotel room. This is a plus for the time management challenged businessman. The best time to begin your workout is first thing in the morning. If you meeting is at 8:00AM , get to the gym by 6:00AM for a 1 hour workout. Split your workout into 30 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of resistance training. You will feel more alive and alert for your meeting. Planning a post meeting workout is possible, but the chances of not getting in your workout, are seriously reduced. Too often unexpected business meetings and dinners sabotage the best intended plans.

5. Motivation: Your attitude for success can make or break your ability to eat health and get in your workout. My mantra to all my clients is” if you put as much energy into your health and fitness as you have your career, you could easily be another Arnold Schwarzenegger. So get chronic with the program”

In summary, the 21st century business persona lives a crazy unpredictable lifestyle that can be disastrous to overall health. I have numerous clients who had or currently live with morbid obesity, hypertension, diabetes, fatty liver disease, had strokes, chronic depression, anxiety disorders and have had heart attacks in their 40’s and 50’s. Why does this happen? There are numerous explanations, however the more common reasons are, lack of life-style balance, devotion to competition and the lure of the all mighty dollar. The remedy is so simple, but often overlooked. Exercise, proper nutrition and stress management. This has been proven over and over again, by the medical community as the most effective approach to improve health and longevity. The question is how bad do you want this, and are you willing to acquiesce and get help from the experts?

I’m not just your average trainer. Some trainers don’t look like trainers. Many lack the medical aptitude and experience to design and implement a safe and effective exercise program, and that’s a bad sign from the start. Some train their clients exactly as they train themselves. Many hurt their clients and send them back to their sedentary lifestyles.


Myself, I think “outside the box” and bring life to others. I don’t duplicate fitness programs and my training programs are constructive, not destructive. Each and every client I train has a unique experience. With the overwhelming, conflicting advertising and marketing campaigns in the health and fitness industry, the average consumer becomes confused and disoriented in their eating habits and exercise programs. I find it a personal challenge and responsibility to weed out the fact from the fiction. A hypothesis is only a guess until proven with real statistically proven hardcore research with large sampling. Solid facts also come from anecdotal experience and documented evidence over time.

Join the RiverFront Revolution for a celebration of Wellness, Fitness, and Fun

The Inaugural Riverfront Revolution 10K, 5K Run/Walk, 1 Mile Fun Run, Kiddy Run and Wellnessfest are the first of its kind for fitness enthusiasts and those looking for resurrection of their health and wellness.

Join runners, walkers, friends and family for an event full of fitness, education, entertainment and fun activities.

“Run – Walk your best time and then stay for the farmers market, entertainment, Wellness Expo, and more,” states former MD State Governor’s Fitness Council Rep, avid runner, trainer, and race organizer and director Greg Taylor. Bring the kids too! Ariel Foundation International will celebrate International Children’s Day during this event. The National Harbor is the future home of The state-of-the-art National Children’s Museum, which will serve as a multifaceted facility for nearly 1 million children living in the national capital area, as well as the children of the world. This museum is expected to attract five and a half million visitors with children each year. Taylor said “he envisions this museum inspiring children to dream, explore myriad cultures, learn about holistic health practices, using environmental nurturing as a means to foster health and ways to improve our world.

This event will benefit many–many– many people through the efforts and commitments of the Vibrant Health and Wellness Foundation –Whose mission is to improve the health and wellness of the people of Maryland, and the Washington DC metropolitan area by serving as an advocate for health-fitness promotion, wellness education and disease prevention. Taylor said he is looking to support and strengthen by collaboration organizations that seek to improve the health of underserved populations. Leadership, disease prevention, and health promotion initiatives are the catalyst for reducing health care cost while keeping our children and families healthy. Taylor said he is pleased to announce that Josh Basile of Determined2Heal will serve as his guest speaker and motivator for change in spite of adversity. Riverfront Revolution’s underpinning serves to re-enforce healthy lifestyle while reducing the potential for healthcare cost becoming a major unbearable burden for our communities and America if not brought under control.

“We are very excited to host the Riverfront Revolution in our nation’s capital. We want to promote the message that health and fitness can be fun, exciting, and family friendly. There is something for everyone to enjoy,” adds Taylor.  This event’s location at the new National Harbor makes the Riverfront Revolution a much-anticipated event.  Located on 300 acres of spectacular real estate along the scenic Potomac River in Prince George’s County, MD, National Harbor is the new gateway to the National Capital Region. “We envision this event serving as a Mecca for launching the President’s Health Care Reform initiative. Every American should have the opportunity to live healthy and disease free,” says Taylor.
